Ethical AI is nothing but all about building trust and ensuring that the latest technology blends well with human lives and values.
A poll conducted among more than 3,000 people above 18 years showed that 86% of people wanted their governments to set necessary rules for AI companies. The motive was simple: creating AI ethics helps establish AI that contributes and works for everyone. So that these rules can help protect people and make AI systems fair by eliminating bias.
Let’s understand first what ethics are exactly. Ethics is a set of moral principles that helps in differentiating in-between right and wrong. AI ethics is nothing but a multidisciplinary area that studies how to optimize the beneficial outcomes of AI, while minimizing risks and adverse results.

Though rules and protocols are developed to manage the ethical use of AI, the academic communities have followed the Belmont Report as a standard to guide ethics within algorithmic development and experimental research.
The Belmont Report is ‘Ethical Principles and Guidelines for the Protection of Human Subjects of Research’. It was created by ‘The National Commission for Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioural Research’ in 1978. There are mainly three principles of the Belmonte Report that offer guidance for experimental and algorithm design.

1. Respect for Individuals: The first principle touches on the idea of consent. Every individual must be aware of the benefits along with the potential risks of any experiment that they’re a part of, including they must be capable of choosing to participate or withdraw at any time before or during the experiment.
2. Generosity: This principle is based on kindness, follows healthcare ethics, where doctors take an oath to “do no harm.” This principle tends to be applied easily to artificial intelligence, where algorithms can amplify biases around race, gender, and political leanings, despite the intention to do right and better.
3. Justice: The third principle mainly deals with fairness and equality issues. The Belmont Report offers five ways to distribute responsibilities and benefits. Equal share, Individual need, Individual effort, Social contribution, and Merits.
Transparency: Every developer should build systems whose decisions making and processes can be seen openly and understood.
Data Safety Norms: Systems using AI must protect user’s data by encryption, access control and standard authentication methods to prevent any unauthorized breach into system.
Equality and Impartiality: All AI systems must be designed to avoid biased decisions, including using diverse datasets, impartiality-aware algorithms and performance testing around various demographic groups and communities.
Accountability: Ethical responsibility varies individuals and institutions involved in the development of AI. Precise guidelines and proper documentations assure that all the participators, contributing in AI, clearly understand the intended and unintended effects of the system.
Security & Well-being: Every system should be rigorously tested for standard security. Failure-proof mechanisms and rollback procedures are crucial components of secure deployment.
